Markus is a Visiting Professor of Political Science at Freie Universität Berlin's Institute for Latin American Studies and a Senior Associate of the Global Security Programme. At GSP, he is the Co-PI of the project ‘Colombian Lessons? Assessing the Practical and Normative Consequences of Latin American South-South Security Cooperation’. He is also affiliated with the CONPEACE initiative, where he previously was a postdoctoral research fellow (2020-21) and a researcher and the area lead on security governance (2021-22). Further, he is a Co-Investigator of the OX|BER Centre for Advanced Studies Cooperation Group 'Transitions and Social Cohesion in Context of Multiple Crises'. Markus holds a PhD in political science from Freie Universität Berlin. His research focuses on security and development in Latin America with an emphasis on peace- and state-building, security sector reform, policing, and border governance. His research was published or is forthcoming in Security Dialogue, Third World Quarterly, Journal of Illicit Economies and Development, Globalizations, Geoforum, and Journal of Latin American Geography.
